Instead, we need to be particularly discriminating when matching the technology and form of delivery to the type and level of language instruction. The following pages propose that when identifying interesting and excitingĢ 54 Unlock the Gateway to Communication technologies and forms of delivery, we must be careful to resist the temptation of a one-size-fits-all mentality. Indeed, as schools of thought have come and gone, so have language teaching methods waxed and waned in popularity (Brown, 1994, p. While still considered a young discipline, second language acquisition research and theory have evolved tremendously in a relatively short amount of time (Ellis, 2012). Many of these educators continue to seek out, create, and try new techniques for language learning. Introduction As new gateways to communication, technological applications present a myriad of seemingly limitless choices for language educators. While hybrid and online learning may provide an important gateway to communication for many, our findings suggest that it is not necessarily the right fit for all and that more detailed consideration of both the type of course and the level of learner is needed before full-scale format changes should be adopted. Two different populations of learners are examined: beginning learners of French in a basic post-secondary language course and French majors and minors in a fourth-year post-secondary content course. Following a review of the literature that has tended to find no significant difference between the student learning outcomes from those taught in traditional courses as compared to students from hybrid language courses, this study compares student satisfaction information. This study examines student perception of the hybrid experience. 1 4 Hybrid language instruction: Finding the right fit Abstract Carolyn Gascoigne & Juliette Parnel University of Nebraska Omaha Where do students fit into hybrid language instruction? The answer depends on the students themselves. For instance, a software company will have very different affinities to a pet food manufacturer. This is useful for organizations that want to create and set their own unique affinities. For instance, a restaurant could use it to determine why the number of customers has declined over the past year. It is most commonly used in the service industry. The 4S diagram organizes information into four categories: suppliers, systems, surroundings, and skills. For instance, it could be used to improve the efficiency of a housekeeping business. The 8P diagram organizes information into eight categories: procedures, policies, place, product, people, processes, price, and promotion. For instance, it could be used to identify bottlenecks slowing down the manufacturing process in a candle business. It is most commonly used in the manufacturing industry. The 6M diagram organizes information into six categories: man, machine, material, method, mother nature, and measurement. A line, known as the 'spine,' is drawn to the left, and other branches, which are types of causes known as 'affinities,' shoot off above and below it. They are also referred to as Fishikawa, herringbone diagrams, or cause and effect diagrams.Īn Ishikawa diagram places the central problem, known as the 'effect,' on the far right of the diagram. Because of this structure, Ishikawa diagrams are sometimes referred to as fishbone diagrams. The ribs represent the causes of an event, and the skeleton's head indicates the outcome. Visually, the diagram's structure resembles the skeleton of a fish. The diagram is named after its creator, Kaoru Ishikawa. It is commonly used in product development to brainstorm and outline the different steps within a given process, allocate resources, and determine whether quality control issues are likely to arise. An Ishikawa diagram is designed to show the potential causes of a specific event or process. Refraktions is available as an Audio Source, MIDI Source, and MIDI Filter. What I like about Refraktions is that you have more direct control to influence by means of sorta playing it. My favorite in the generative genre is Refraktions. It's definitely worth the time to try out the demos. I like Wotja's algorithms, and I got used to the new interface. (You don't have to use this at all if you just want to use the generative engine to drive other apps over MIDI.) A lot of the depth is hidden from view behind instant-gratification auto-generation and randomisation features for casual users, so you can ease your way into it, though the provided templates and demoes can be a bit samey and thin-sounding compared to what the app is capable of. Tap a generative voice to get all the options in one gigantic scrolling page with a sidebar for quick navigation to sections, and tap a Poly object to get the modular synth network. But for those coming to it for the first time, the cell view does give a reasonably intuitive visual sense of its overall workings: on the left (under Voices) is the generative engine, and on the right is the sound engine. Yes, the interface isn't going to win any prizes for aesthetics. I got the 2017 edition when it came out but I used it max 5 times ‘cause it was too confusing for me and the interface was uninviting.ĭefinitely a powerful tool but not my cup of tea. I love the concept but I simply cannot understand how does it work. No new sounds in the 2018 version, but there are good new collections of demoes and said: (It's just an extension of the 2017 random-piece generation feature you choose which of your own files and the provided templates get used to generate the tracks, and set various randomisation parameters, though they were saying in the forum yesterday that they're planning to allow you to save presets of randomisation settings, which would be a big deal.) It's no different from creating ten new random files in a row from the same setting, but I've been rather enjoying taking a single-cell patch of my own and spinning it into an entire album of related variations. The 2018 version does have one quite compelling new feature over the 2017 one: you can create an entire album to your specification with a single button press. (This is NOT something a normal human will ever want to do.) 2017/2018 versions are for users who'd rather have a one-off payment and/or keep older versions around, though I have both because it's not AU and I sometimes like to run two instances. There's also a subscription version which works out cheaper or the same unless you want the ability to have pieces play for more than 8 hours continuously, which is only offered as a subscription tier. Is this the same app? Users who purchased 2017 version has updates or no? Duke is totally accessible online, so why put your fingers in your ears and try and block out what he has to say - if it’s an issue, then don’t give him the spotlight and make the podcast in the first place. There are many arguments against this approach, but especially given that the audience of this podcast is by its nature interested in the nuance of political testimony, and is capable of discerning their own views on a controversial subject, no matter how ‘offensive’. If you deem the subject sufficiently interesting to make the series about it, I simply can’t fathom how you would then declare your refusal to interview him. The biggest, gaping fail, is the college student-esque refusal midway through the series not to interview the man. This makes for a flat, unexciting listener journey. It starts with how undeniably repugnant Duke is, and ends with it, with the story or character assessment not having moved on at all. Neither does the story contain any genuinely interesting twists and turns, or mysteries. Jack and Barbara Willke got their start on the Catholic speaking circuit talking about the pleasure of sex within marriage. The main problem is that this results in an endless grind fest, each weapon being upgradable to level 70. The bugs continue their invasion during gameplay, they show their ugly heads in the net code as packet bursts, and even during the animations post-match when you are supposed to vote for the MVP.īut in the Gunsmith now you can tinker with 10 addons for the weapons, including ammo types. In reality the filtering system is broke, and you the game will place you where it wants despite your criteria. By choosing between Tactical, Assault and Blitz in theory you should be able to find something as close as possible to your playstyle. This should be countered somehow by the new Combat Pacing option. Often you can’t really hear your opponents and the things are completely unbalanced by the Ninja perk and the Dead Silence field upgrade.īut the biggest enemy of the balance is the Forward Intel perk that shows the placement of the respawning opponents. The synthetic contrast between the firing sounds in open and closed environments is bad that breaks all immersion. Without trying to be a party pooper I have to mention that the audio part is still severely lacking. That should mean that the multiplayer is kick ass and polished and engaging. So, the five studios that worked together on developing Vanguard failed miserably with the campaign and dropped the ball with the zombies. As a result, Vanguard contains basically a horde mode, that wants to serve as a place holder until the developers have time to put the proper zombie mode together and continue the events started in Cold War. This year though, despite the short and haphazardly put together campaign, the developers did not have time to finish the zombie mode either. And I have to admit that there is some truth to these claims, since they can usually offer a lot of fun, especially if you play them with friends. The main defense of the CoD fans for some time was the fact that you do not play the yearly releases for their story, but for their actions that shines in multiplayer and zombies modes. This game design is just indolent, especially that almost a third of the length of the story are unskippable cutscenes. On the other hand, while cleaning the trenches on the shores of Normandy for the landing party you will see several dead soldiers, frozen in motion instead of collapsing to the ground. Even on the hardest difficulty your opponents are dumber than a pair of boots, missing you even when they surround you. Things are made worse by the terrible AI and the bugs that still haunt the single player campaign. There is no connection between the player and the heroes, there is no memorable moment and there is not even a speck of originality in the missions and objectives. The entire single player campaign feels like a mandatory chore that you can’t get out of, so you better just get it done, like taking out the trash or doing the dishes. There are some new elements like the less than basic parkour skills of the Russian sniper lady, but they stand out like a sore thumb. The story that focuses on the last days of the Nazi empire is a bad joke, built from missions that lack any depth or engagement. Vanguard fails to deliver on its inspiration from war movies like The Dirty Dozen, that present a team that learns no work together through the common hardships they face. Their backgrounds are presented through feedback sections that take up most of the roughly 6-hour long campaign. Vanguard tries to replace them with no less than six heroes, each one being an ambulant collection of stale cliches. Even the shambles of a story line are gone, and we have not seen a memorable face in the series since “Soap” MacTacish or John Price. The success of Warzone encouraged Activision to focus solely on milking that gimmick, and this year the cracks of the franchise are undeniable.įor a while now the single player part of the CoD games is nothing but an excuse. But this year, with Vanguard, the comparison with The Emperor’s New Clothes is more actual than ever, Call of Duty failing on every front. The yearly CoD games split the audiences in two: those who praise it for its multiplayer or zombie modes, and those who have the courage to point out that the king is actually naked. Read on only if you want to find out why Vanguard is maybe the weakest iteration of the entire franchise. Is there something new to talk about it? Probably, but it’s much easier to just remix the fan-favorite and throw them on the automated factory assembly line that Call of Duty had become. World War II is perhaps the most successful setting even for shooters even after the countless games that turned the bloodiest human conflict inside and out. |
